New Black Rock Desert Photo History Book
There is a new photo-history book about the Gerlach and Black Rock Desert area from Arcadia Publishing. The book, titled “Black Rock Desert,” is part of Arcadia’s Images of America series. The book covers the period of time from prehistory until 1990. The thesis of the book is that interesting people have been doing interesting things in the area of many years. The events that are covered include art from the Lassen Trail; The Winning of Barbara Worth, starring Gary Cooper, in 1926; and a wild horse roundup as documented by Gus Bundy. Also included are recent works of art such as Doobie Lane and Croquet X Machina, which was a croquet game played with trucks were used as mallets on nearly 6-foot croquet balls. The Empire store first opened its doors in 1957 to help serve the families employed by US Gypsum. Owners George and Nevada Lambert ran the store for more than 30 years. The current owner Dana Sparkes purchased the store in 2010 and remodeled the interior. Shortly after they purchased the store, US Gypsum closed the plant and the adjacent town of Empire vacated, save a few hearty souls who still called Empire home. Now, Empire is striking back — the mine has reopened and hired on many employees, bringing life back to this tiny outpost. The Gerlach Volunteer Fire Department offers fire and emergency medical services to the surrounding community. The GVFD is part of the Washoe County Fire Suppression division. The fire department has four fire trucks ad ambulences. Volunteers are trained for structure and wildland fires. The ambulances are intermediate life support. Some emergencies are an automatic call to Care Flight for helicopter transport. Covering from Pyramid Lake to the Oregon Border and parts of Pershing and Humbolt Counties.
