The Black Rock Desert

Gerlach is the primary gateway community for visitors to the Black Rock Desert and surrounding public lands.

In 2000, Congress designated over 1.2 million acres and 10 Wilderness Areas as the Black Rock Desert -High Rock Canyon / Emigrant Trails National Conservation Area.

Over the years, the Black Rock Desert has been home to several unique events, from the colorful “Lucifer’s Anvil Golf Tournament” to rocket launches, film locations, the annual Burning Man festival and more.
